Be Aware - Your Images Can Now Be Embedded

Hi all,

You may or may not know that with the DA new page layout, which has now been rolled out, if someone choose to view your gallery as a slide show, DA automatically provides the code to the view allowing them to embed that slide show on a web page outside of DA.

Which might not mean much to some of you. But to photographers who are concerned with copyright and managing the usage rights of their images, it is a big slap in the face.

The feedback I've received from DA is basically that it's part of the new layout and you can't control it.

So if you don't already watermark and tag your images then I strongly suggest that you do. Because from now on, you never know where you images might turn up.

And if you feel strongly about this as I do, I urge you to click on the link above and let DA know how you feel!

Due to other commitments, the deadline for entries submissions in the "Freeze Frame" Contest has been extended to midnight February 14th, 2009, Australian Eastern Standard time.

The contest is for photographs and digital images which represent a single moment or "frame" of the human characters from a fictional movie - be it drama, horror, SF/F, historical, Western etc... let you imagination run wild!

[These images represent a frame taken from a movie, showing the characters doing something. It doesn't have to be a real movie, it could be something you would like to see in a movie.

The Grand Prize is a one year subscription to DA!

Trying to keep up with Flickr I suppose. It's a great idea for sharing your photos in theory. However, unless they find some way of making it password protected (so only you can embed your own images) or opting out like you can with mobile access it's only going to make things harder for us artists who have enough trouble keeping our images unabused.

Thanks for bringing this to my attention, having not been around much lately I hadn't heard about it.

I have tried to make the whole copyright issue a little easier for myself to 'lighten' the stess load when my work gets displayed outside of DA. By watermarking everything with links to my site, and protecting it with creative commons act: Attribution-Noncommercial-No Derivative Works 2.5 Generic which allows the work to copied, distributed and transmited, but basically nothing else.

This way I can basically wash my hands of people sharing it and 'accept' it as free advertising, so long as they do not violate the other terms, I am happy. Trying to track down every person that has my image on their page is futile, and sends me insane.

The embed is linking directly back to deviantART though, particularly your image and giving you the credit - what copyright concerns do you have?
